“Hi, Can We Rip You Off?”
Is what it can feel like when someone asks you what your budget is.
Like, how the hell are you expected to answer that?
Whenever someone asks me that question, my mind starts spiralling and I’m sitting there pretending my Zoom screen is frozen while I think:
How much do these things cost?
If I say this, do I sound rich?
If I say this, do I sound poor?
If I say this number, am I about to get ripped off?
If I say this number, am I about to look like a thicky thicky dumb dumb?
So, I thought I’d explain why we ask about your budget.
At House of Zemi, we ask about budget because we create custom packages for our clients.
We are highly ethical beings who believe that a one-size-fits-all approach is… ugh. Pathetic?
Because no business is the same, so why the helly would your marketing be?
We work with all kinds of budgets, from $1k-a-month retainers to 100k-a-month retainers. Lkay, technically we’ve never had a $100k-a-month retainer, but I’m putting it out into the universe just in case someone wants to make our wildest dreams come true.
The difference between those budgets isn’t how much we care about you.
It’s:
1. The monthly price.
2. What goes into your package.
If your budget is $1k a month? Stunning. Beautiful. We love that and we love you.
It just means your package is going to be more focused than someone who has $100k a month to throw at their marketing.
And that’s completely fine.
Our goal is to get the most out of your budget, whatever that budget happens to be.
If you can only afford a one-off shoot every few months, that’s exciting. We’re already packing our camera gear.
If you can afford for us to handle your marketing, social media, graphic design, content creation and everything in between? We love that too.
It’s purely about the scope of your package.
And I want to make this really clear:
We are not trying to be sneaky.
We’re not sitting there thinking, “Ooooh, they have a big budget. Let’s absolutely rinse them.”
And we’re definitely not thinking, “Wow, these people are so poor.”
We genuinely couldn’t give a flying fuck about the number itself.
We’re just trying to meet you where you’re at and figure out what we can realistically do with the budget you have.
Because knowing your budget helps us work backwards.
Instead of throwing a random package at you and hoping you can afford it, we can look at what you actually need, what your goals are and how we can make the most of what you’re comfortable investing.
So next time someone asks you for your budget, you don’t need to panic and pretend your WiFi has gone down.
They’re probably just trying to figure out what’s possible.
